Ship Rock, NM
We Need Your Picture

Directions to park: From Shiprock, travel 6.2 miles south on highway 666. Turn West on road to Red Rock for 8 miles to east side of South Dike. Turn right on dirt road to south west base (bivy spot...). Possible to approach from other dirt roads to west of highway 666.

Access is "do-able" but only under the permission of the land owner and under fairly fragile conditions!! My wife is Navajo and her uncle owns the property on the northwest side near the rift (the approach side for Fred Beckey's route. She has asked him (her uncle) about access and all he really wants in return is for people to just be repsectful and ASK!!!! NOT SNEAK AROUND....he also asks not to scare the livestock when passing through. However, a 12-pack wouldn't hurt either.... (soda that is!). In any case, this has been the true issue. Not the '62 Beckey incident. The sign Beckey encountered upon his return was Lucky's brother device to get rid of disrespectful adventurers. This sign has long since disappeared. People should also consider not making a mass exodus to Ship Rock just because the landowner wants people to ask for permission before access is granted. The Navajos have tried to keep as much of their sacred sites and places of mystic orgin sacred. Ship Rock is one of them as well as Canyon de Chelly (Spider Woman Rock and the White House Cliffs, for example). There's plenty of Windgate Sandstone elsewhere. If you insist on making Ship Rock one of your "must do's" then be creative in helping the Navajos trust us climbers in preserving what is rightfuly theirs by suggesting clean-ups and other projects of cooperation. Not only at Ship Rock but in the Red Mountain area; around Canyon de Chelly also. The best place to suggest this type of stewardship is over in Window Rock, AZ at the Bureau of Indian Affairs office (Vistors Liason Office). Let's get this right for the last time and shed the distrust.....once and for all.
