COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT: ROCKTOWN TRAIL DAY

The 4th Annual Jeff Wingo Memorial Trail Day at Rocktown is scheduled for May 5, 2001. Rocktown is located on Crockford-Pigeon Mountain near LaFayette, GA. Volunteers should report to the Rocktown parking area at 10:00am.

This year’s event is organized by THE CHALLENGE Rock Climbing School in Atlanta, GA. The school adopted the Rocktown Trail in 1996 and dedicates public service hours to maintaining the trails and locations used frequently by rock climbers.

Volunteers work to correct trail problems, and complete a general cleaning of the popular climbing area. Projects are supervised by Allen Padgett, ranger for the Wildlife Management Area. Tasks for this year will include erosion problems and construction of new stone walls to deter people from going off the main trail to Rocktown.

Volunteers are given a snack lunch, t-shirt and give-a-ways from Atlanta retailers and climbing manufacturers. This year’s raffle will benefit The Access Fund, a national organization working for issues pertaining to climbing areas throughout the United States; The Southeastern Climbers Coalition; and The Jeff Wingo Scholarship Fund at Berry College, Rome, GA.

If you are interested in volunteering, or if your organization would like to help organize the Annual Rocktown Trail Day, please contact Kathryn Dodgen @ 404-237-4021 or 800-831-4317 or email: info@TheChallengeRock.com.
