Directions to park:
Rock Creek is an absolute must-do when visiting the east side of the Sierras.
Especially when the gorge is too hot or the crowds are overwhelming. With
amazing high quality granite and awe inspiring vistas, Rock Creek offers
sweet crack and face climbing on steep angle stone. Located approximately
16 miles south of Mammoth Lakes (or 25 miles north of Bishop), this makes
it a prime target for personal solitude. Take the 395 to Tom's Place.
Turn onto Rock Creek Road and head south. Travel the road until a campground
parking area is encountered on the right hand side. Most of Rock Creek
is one continuous rock formation and starts directly across from Rock
Creek proper. The first two formations encountered are Tinytown and Iris
Slab. The following areas are further south from Iris Slab: the Gong Show,
Granny Slab, Magnum Crag and Daknucklehead. Even further is Ungracious
Wall and Skidrow Wilsom. Most of these areas require crossing Rock Creek
minus Tinytown and is best crossed after late spring on into mid-fall.
Be sure to check out the ultr-classic/sporty "HeShe" (.10d)
on the Gong Show and "Switch Hitter" (.10b). If you need your
fill of hand jams and finger tugging crack then be sure to spy out "The
Magnus" (.10c) on The Magnus Crag..... this baby milks out every
crack technique imaginable!! Be sure to bring two 60 meter ropes for some
of the mulit-pitch climbs. Bring your entire rack and ambition for this
gem of a climbing area. |
