Directions to park: Horse pens 40 is a concentrated sandstone boulderfield in a privately owned park. It was opened to climbers for the first time ever, in July of the year 2000. hp40 is located in northeastern Alabama, 40 miles northeast of Birmingham. Leave I-59 at exit 166 which is sign posted to both Oneonta and also hp40 itself (look for the brown signs). head towards Oneonta, and after 4 miles look for a big hp40 sign just before a right turn. Take this turn, and then after a mile, take another right turn, again at a hp40 sign, which leads you up a winding road to the top of chandler mountain. The entrance to the park is on the right just after you top out. From the interstate to hp40 is approximately 7 miles. HP40 is Open Again!!!
Horse Pens
40. is open to
most low-impact activities, including bouldering, hiking, camping,
etc., as well as Bluegrass festivals, Native American festivals, Mountain
Arts and Crafts, Civil War re-enactments, motorcycle rallys, and other
historical, educational, and nature oriented activities.
They are
in the process of getting the paperwork settled, and should have the
power and water on soon. They have the park open now (for now, they are open
Thurs. thru Sun. 9am til ?, Closed Mon. thru Wed.) for day use
including bouldering and hiking, as well as camping. The day use fee is
still
$3.00 per person. Campsites are $10.00 per night. They temporarily have
portable restrooms for the convenience of their guests.
Please see
if you can get this info out to the bouldering community, as they need
their support in order for bouldering to become a significant and viable
portion of the various activities that take place in the park. We look
forward to the future good relationship between the bouldering
community and Horse Pens 40. Thank you for your help and support in this
matter.
